Circularity as Brand DNA
What sets DGTL apart from plenty of other festivals is the insistence that sustainability isn't an add-on. By its own account, the festival has chased the goal of becoming a circular event since 2013. Sustainability Manager Esmee Bouwmeister puts it bluntly: "Circularity doesn't start on-site, it starts months before."
Prep Starts Months Out
Even in the planning phase, DGTL runs on reusable hard-plastic cups instead of single-use plastic and a cashless system to cut waste. Signage gets reused across multiple editions instead of being freshly produced. Suppliers face a Materials Policy and a material-breakdown questionnaire — every material gets a plan for a "second life," including a return system with the vendors themselves.
What Happens During and After the Festival
On-site, recycling stations with a cup-return system and a central Recycle Hub keep waste streams separated by glass, organics, metals, and cardboard. Green Teams guide punters as volunteer stewards, backed by AI-driven recycling bins and mobile collection robots. Catering leans on local produce. Afterward comes a material-flow analysis with kilogram-level tracking: what's reusable goes back to rental partners or gets repurposed, the rest to certified recyclers.
