Villalobos dissects goat (JP): Minimal from the dance theater
The source material consists of the pieces “Orin” and “Factory,” which goat (JP) composed for the dance piece “Without References” by choreographer Cindy van Acker. According to the label, the group led by Osaka-based composer Koshiro Hino transforms non-tonal rhythm patterns into hypnotic structures. The stage for the piece was designed by Romeo Castellucci, featuring eleven dancers.
Villalobos turns these into three extended variations: “Orin” runs for 9:08 minutes, while the two versions of “Factory” are each just under 13 minutes. Groove author Christoph Gleich describes how Villalobos further trims the “bare-bones rhythmic skeletons” and dips the minimal remnants “into the hypnosis sauce” until you “start bouncing along around minute seven.” This is material for long transitions, not quick changes.
According to Latency, the record follows Villalobos’ variation of “Swamp” by percussionist Mohammad Reza Mortazavi (2025), also released on Latency. The label introduces him as follows:

Function, Perry & Koski: two styles of reduction
Function – Aeternum (Existenz) (Tresor): This mini-LP compiles tracks from 2016 to 2019. Groove reviewer Maximilian Fritz places them in the legacy of Sandwell District: “Reduction in reverb, mid-tempo moderation, intensity through endurance.” His recommended tracks are the core piece “City of Luz” and “Growth Cycle (Hermetic Mix).”
Justine Perry & Paula Koski – Paired Works (Ostgut Ton): The two together fill four record sides with techno, according to Groove, without ambient fillers. The critics' favorites are “Fracture” and “Held in Place.”
