Novation has introduced the FLpad, an 8x8 grid controller designed specifically for operating the FL Studio software. In terms of hardware, the unit is based on the manufacturer's Launchpad series, but utilizes a user interface, firmware, and DAW scripts developed specifically for the Channel Rack. This continues the company's collaboration with Image-Line.
Features and Workflow
The unit features 64 velocity-sensitive pads with RGB backlighting, providing direct hardware access to the step sequencer and the Channel Rack. Using the step sequencer, drum patterns, basslines, and melodies can be created and edited for up to four instruments simultaneously. Patterns can be created, selected, duplicated, or deleted directly on the hardware.
Operation is complemented by dedicated buttons for transport controls as well as undo and redo. The FLpad offers several operational modes:
- A note mode allows for chromatic playing or performing within selected musical scales.
- Dedicated finger drumming layouts support FPC, Slicex, and Fruity Slicer.
- The graph editor allows individual notes to be edited directly via the grid.
- The pad grid can function as a row of faders for the Channel Rack mixer.
- Custom layouts for other software or hardware can be created using Novation Components.
Included Software
The controller comes with six months of FL Studio Producer Edition. The bundle also includes instruments and effects from UVI, GForce, and Klevgrand, as well as finger drumming lessons from Melodics.
