When you prepare a DJ set, you decide much of the night at your desk: which tracks fit together tonally, where the energy rises and where your cue points sit. Tools like Mixed In Key and rekordbox handle the analysis – reading the room is still your job.

Mixing in key: reading the Camelot Wheel
Mixed In Key translates musical keys into a simple system: each key gets a number and a letter. The outer ring shows major keys, the inner ring minor keys. You can stay in the same key or move one step up or down – so 5A goes to 4A, 6A or 5B.
Switching between the inner and outer ring works with the same number: 8A goes to 8B. Some DJs use a hard jump like 3A to 9A as a deliberate surprise – Mixed In Key explicitly advises extreme caution.
Plan energy, not just BPM
A key tells you nothing about how a track works on the dancefloor. For that, Mixed In Key assigns an Energy Level from 1 to 10. According to the company, level 5 is where people start dancing – typical of some Deep House, Minimal, Techno and Tech House tracks.
Level 6 is common in Techno, Tech House and House: a constant beat, a nice bassline, a groovy hi-hat pattern. Mixed In Key says you can play it all night without people getting bored. Levels 8 and 9, on the other hand, exhaust the crowd; if you go that high, build up to it and use it as the climax.
Analysing tracks and setting cues in rekordbox
rekordbox 7 analyses the BPM and beatgrid of every track; if you are not happy with the result, you can adjust both manually. The software shows keys in Classic or Alphanumeric notation, and phrase analysis reveals a track's structure.
Intelligent Cue Creation learns from a playlist in which you have set Hot Cues and Memory Cues and applies those habits to new tracks.
