Sound Engine: ACB, FM and Your Own Samples
At the core of the TR-8S is ACB technology, with which Roland replicates the circuit behavior of the classic analog drum machines. On top of that, the unit brings 72 FM sounds that are freely editable, as well as more than 300 preset samples. If you want to use your own material, you import it via SD card – up to 600 seconds of total playback time are available for this. This makes the TR-8S not a pure retro machine, but an instrument that brings classic and modern sound worlds together under one interface.
Sequencer and Layout for Live Use
The 16-step TR-REC sequencer allows eight variations (A–H) per pattern, plus 128 user patterns each with two fill-in patterns. In total, eleven instrument parts plus a trigger-out channel are available. For the performance itself there's a velocity-sensitive instrument pad, letting you play and vary sounds directly – a detail that clearly gears the TR-8S toward stage use, not just studio operation.
Effects and Connections
Each instrument has its own instrument FX like high-pass and low-pass filters, compressor, drive and crusher. On the master bus sit additional performance-ready effects like phaser, flanger and distortion, plus reverb and delay as dedicated effect types. On the chassis itself sit eight analog individual outputs, of which the Mix Out is a 1/4" TRS jack and the assignable outputs are in 1/4" jack format, plus a trigger output, a stereo audio input, MIDI In/Out as well as a USB Type-B port for audio and MIDI, complemented by an SD card slot.
