ZDF Investigation: Journalists on Hard Techno Allegations

· re:union Radio editorial · 1 min read

Silja Thoms and Maike von Galen discuss their ZDF investigation into abuse allegations in the hard techno scene and their meeting with bradnolimit.

The ZDF documentary “Missbrauch: Insider schockt die Techno-Szene” investigated serious allegations made against well-known DJs in the hard techno scene. Public statements by content creator bradnolimit initially triggered the discussions. Journalists Silja Thoms and Maike von Galen spoke to Groove about their months of investigative work.

Investigation and Meeting in Ibiza

Katrin Fuhrmann of DJ Mag facilitated access to bradnolimit. The face-to-face interview with the whistleblower took place in Ibiza after an initial delay. While the creator denied acting out of revenge, the reporters highlighted that a later court decision identified a revenge motive behind his actions. Additionally, allegations surfaced against bradnolimit himself during the research, prompting the team to focus strictly on verifiable claims.

Dialogues with Victims and Promoters

The journalists also spoke with DJ Vansessy from Austria, who shared personal experiences of abuse, as well as the initiative MeTooDJ. They also addressed the actions taken by Florian Gebauer, organizer of the Open Beatz festival, who removed accused performers from the lineup on short notice. With at least one active court proceeding involving an accused artist, legal advisors guided the reporting on unproven allegations.

Demands for the Scene

The reporters called for clear safeguards behind the scenes of music events. Silja Thoms and Maike von Galen outlined vital requirements:

  • Backstage Awareness: Independent teams with genuine authority must operate behind the stages as well as in front of them.
  • Intervention: Maike von Galen noted: „Wer im Backstage Anzeichen von Machtmissbrauch bemerkt, darf nicht schweigend danebenstehen.”
