The Roland TR-6S packs six tracks of ACB-modeled TR classics, an FM engine, chromatic bass, and battery power into a pocket-sized beat machine for production on the move.
The Roland TR-6S brings the sonic legacy of the legendary TR series into a chassis that runs on four AA batteries and fits in any pocket. As a compact, six-track variant of the larger TR-8S, it houses detailed ACB circuit models of the TR-808, TR-909, TR-606, TR-707, and TR-727 — plus the CR-78 CompuRhythm, direct predecessor to the TR-808 and the sound source behind countless pop classics since the eighties.

A Sequencer with Pedigree
At the heart of the TR-6S sits the classic TR-REC step sequencer that defined Roland's early drum computers. Roland has expanded it with real-time recording, sub-steps for rattling fills, flam, step-loop for performative slices, motion recording, and probability functions at step, sub-step, and master levels. Each pattern gets eight variations (A–H) and two fill-in patterns, with 16 steps per variation across six instrument tracks.
Sound Engine: Mix, Not Museum
Each of the six tracks can be freely assigned its own ACB tone — from eleven bass drums and eight snares to nineteen toms, plus three rimshots, five handclaps, eight hi-hats, eight cymbals, and twenty-four percussion sounds. On top of that, you get seventy-two FM tones for contemporary, futuristic textures, a preset sample library with over 300 sounds, and support for your own user samples. For basslines, there's the newly developed TR-808 Chromatic Bass, which makes the 808 kick playable across the keyboard. Roland describes the concept themselves:
"Mix and match sounds for exotic hybrid drum kits."
That lets you combine sounds from different machines and eras in a single kit — a blend that wouldn't be possible on any single original hardware unit.
Effects, Editor, and Connectivity
For punch, space, warmth, or grit, compressors and EQs are right at your fingertips, alongside reverb, delay, and modulation effects, plus filters and LFOs. Via the free TR-EDITOR software, available through the Roland Cloud Manager, you can edit patterns and kits on a big screen, including deep access to FM parameterization. The TR-6S itself doubles as a high-quality USB audio/MIDI interface for mobile setups.
