Ambrio has introduced the Spatial Performance Mixer SPM, designed to bring real-time spatial audio control directly into DJ and live sets.

Belgian company Ambrio has unveiled the Ambrio SPM. The standalone Spatial Performance Mixer is built for DJs and live performers, integrating spatial audio directly into live sets. Using a multi-speaker setup, individual audio sources can be positioned and moved across the room in real time.

Features and spatial control

The unit features five performance channels, each equipped with trim controls, a 4-band EQ, high-pass and low-pass filters, cue functions, and spatial effects including reverb and delay. A built-in display provides views for setup tasks as well as live performance. An orange button serves as a reset trigger to activate or bypass movement, filters, and effects simultaneously.

A dedicated algorithm translates conventional stereo material to various speaker layouts. According to the manufacturer, four speakers are sufficient to deliver an immersive audio environment, with support extending to setups of up to eight outputs. The hardware also includes a four-point booth monitoring system featuring adjustable delay.

Connectivity and background

The mixer provides a wide range of analog and digital interfaces:

  • Integrated sound card for DAW streaming
  • Four stereo RCA line inputs and two phono inputs
  • Microphone and instrument inputs via XLR/TRS combo sockets
  • Send and return loops for external hardware
  • Up to 8.1 analog main outputs and four balanced booth outputs
  • MIDI, OSC, CV synchronization, and audio-over-Ethernet capabilities

The hardware was developed over several years with input from artists including Yousuke Yukimatsu. According to co-founder Nicolas Geysens, Ambrio views the mixer "wie es in der Dub-Kultur schon immer üblich war: als Instrument".

Starting in October 2026, units are being placed in clubs, festivals, and institutions to gather user feedback. The commercial release is scheduled for 2027. Masterclasses featuring the equipment are scheduled for October 23 and 24 during the Amsterdam Dance Event.
