DJ Effects for Transitions: Echo, Reverb and Filter

Echo, reverb and filter are the three effects you'll find in almost every DJ app and on most club mixers. Used well, they let you fade a track out instead of just cutting it off – and even switch between different tempos.

Echo: from dub sound systems to the techno booth

Echo creates audible repetitions of a sound that gradually fade away. Unlike reverb, you hear distinct repeats rather than a sense of space. According to Digital DJ Tips, the first DJs to use it were the reggae sound systems of Jamaica in the 1970s – tape echo defined dub.

Today echo is usually a beat effect, locked to the tempo. You choose the beat value: a 1-beat echo repeats once per beat, a 1/4-beat echo four times. The dry/wet control, often labelled level/depth, sets how much you hear – fully wet, you only hear the echo.

Filter: the bass swap with a different character

The typical DJ filter combines high-pass and low-pass on one knob. Turn left and you cut the highs, turn right and you cut the lows. That makes it a transition tool: instead of pulling the outgoing track's bass with the low EQ, you open the high-pass – a similar result with a different sound.

Reverb: space for a tempo change

Reverb adds a dense sense of space instead of clearly separated repeats. On snares or claps it makes breakdowns sound bigger and tells the crowd a change is coming. The strongest transition idea: let the end of a section run into the reverb, wait for the tail to fade, then drop a track at a completely different tempo. The long tail takes the edge off the hard cut.

How the effects work in software and mixers

The Traktor manual shows the controls behind the classics. The Delay has a built-in high- and low-pass filter, a feedback control and a freeze function that closes the input and turns the feedback up to maximum. The Reverb offers separate high- and low-pass filters in the effect loop, a size control from small to vast rooms, and freeze as well.

Club mixers work in a similar way. On the Pioneer DJ DJM-A9 you can use the X-Pad to turn Echo and Ping Pong into an analogue tape-style sound. The Sound Color FX feature Center Lock: the knob stops at the centre, so you can twist quickly without slipping into the opposite parameter.
