Karlsruhe club GOTEC has voiced criticism over surging DJ fees, warning that rising expenses threaten the sustainability and accessibility of club culture.
Criticism of rapidly rising fees
Karlsruhe venue GOTEC has addressed the financial strain across the nightlife sector. The operators report DJ fee surges of 200 to 300 percent in certain cases over brief periods. Coupled with mounting energy and staffing expenses, these figures challenge the viability of running events.
Concerns over exclusivity
The club argues that such demands exceed fair compensation. If operators pass these rising costs onto ticket prices, audiences risk being excluded. In its statement, GOTEC emphasised that electronic music must not turn into a luxury and needs to stay affordable and accessible.
To protect upcoming talent and counter venue closures, the venue calls for unity among promoters, agencies, and artists. DJ and activist Marie Montexier noted in response that institutional cultural funding and political support are essential, arguing that simply reducing fees places the burden entirely on performers.
