Solid State Logic presents the Bus Comp Classic, a 1U hardware unit featuring continuously variable VCA Drive and dedicated sidechain options.
Solid State Logic has introduced the Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic. This analog hardware unit arrives in a 1U rack format, translating the bus compressor concept into a standalone device.
Variable VCA Drive for Continuous Saturation
The core addition to the device is the Variable VCA Drive. A continuously adjustable control introduces harmonic coloration. When deactivated, the unit delivers the transient response and transparency of the SuperAnalogue range, including the 9000 series and Duality consoles, according to the manufacturer. Turning up the control blends in harmonic qualities associated with the FX384 and the 4000 series, reaching up to 10 percent THD at the maximum setting.
Circuit Architecture and Sidechain Features
THAT 2181 VCAs operate in the audio path alongside the manufacturer's sidechain architecture. Operation relies on stepped controls for ratio, attack, release, and the sidechain high-pass filter. Settings include a 2:1 ratio as well as the SSL Auto Release mode.
A 6-step high-pass filter is integrated into the sidechain to remove low frequencies from the detector path. In addition, the hardware includes a true stereo external sidechain input, allowing an entire mix to trigger the detector while processing individual stems independently.
