Awakenings: History, Line-up & 2026/27 Dates

From the Gashouder in 1997 to Hilvarenbeek in 2027: the story of Awakenings, the core artists who define its sound, and every upcoming date you need to know.

Few brands have represented Dutch techno as long as Awakenings. What started on March 30, 1997, in Amsterdam’s Gashouder has grown into an entire network of a flagship festival, club series, and international offshoots — all organized by Monumental Productions.

From the Gashouder Through Multiple Locations

According to Wikipedia, the first Awakenings edition took place on March 30, 1997, at the Gashouder, a former gas holder in Amsterdam. The series then moved several times: Now & Wow hosted it in 2001, while large summer editions ran at the Spaarnwoude festival grounds from 2001 to 2004. Events also took place at the NDSM Wharf site (2002–2004), the Graansilo (2004 and 2007), and the recreational area near Halfweg in 2009. Monumental Productions has organized the series since its inception.

A Core Circle of Names

Over the decades, a circle of artists has emerged who appear particularly frequently in Awakenings line-ups, according to Wikipedia: Steve Rachmad, Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing, Dave Clarke, Cari Lekebusch, Marco Carola, and Ben Sims. They stand for the driving, no-nonsense techno sound the brand has been associated with since the late nineties.

Multiple Series, One Shared Calendar

Awakenings is long past being just a single summer date. For fall 2026 and 2027, the official website lists several editions: Awakenings ADE runs October 21–25, 2026, at SugarFactory in Amsterdam, with multiple curated events during Amsterdam Dance Event week — including an Opening Night, a Drumcode night, and the programs Metamorfosi, Friday Sessions, Joris Voorn, Adriatique, Sunday Sessions, and Prophecy, several of which are already sold out according to the site. Alongside that, there’s Upclose, a more intimate festival format: the 2027 edition is set for May 15–16 at Houtrak-Park near Spaarnwoude.

International Expansion

The announcement of Awakenings EXO Colombia shows the brand thinking beyond the Netherlands: the event is slated for December 4, 2026, in Bogotá, according to the official website, and is billed as the brand’s international expansion event.
