Phillip Sollmann and Antje Vowinckel have been appointed to co-lead the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts master's program at Berlin's UdK.
At Berlin University of the Arts, Phillip Sollmann, known under his alias Efdemin, and Antje Vowinckel have been appointed as guest professors. Together, they take over the leadership of the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts master's program at the UdK Berlin Career College as a shared 50-percent team.
Shared Leadership
Vowinckel is an internationally awarded sound artist, composer, and performer focusing on experimental radio art. Sollmann works between electronic club music, sonic research, contemporary composition, and installations. Aside from his presence in the global techno scene, his work includes projects such as Monophonie and the Modular Organ System developed alongside Konrad Sprenger.
Prof. Karin Bjerregaard Schlüter, Managing Director of the UdK Berlin Career College, stated in a press release:
„Wir freuen uns sehr, dass wir mit Antje Vowinckel und Phillip Sollmann zwei so profilierte Persönlichkeiten gewinnen konnten, und wünschen beiden einen guten Start, viel Erfolg und Freude bei ihrer gemeinsamen Aufgabe“.
Uncertain Future for the Program
The appointment takes place during a period of transition. In January, university leadership announced the discontinuation of all master's programs at the Central Institute for Continuing Education and Transfer starting in the winter semester. The institution cited a strategic realignment triggered by modified legal frameworks in the amended Berlin Higher Education Act. A petition opposing the closure garnered over 5,000 signatures, including endorsements from Robert Henke, Dasha Rush, Jan St. Werner, Gerhard Behles, and Carsten Nicolai.
According to the UdK Berlin Career College press office, the program continues to be phased out in its current structure. No new students are being enrolled, allowing existing participants—numbering 63 when the decision was announced—to complete their degrees. Conversations and proposals regarding a restructured version at the university are ongoing, though specific details remain unannounced. Consequently, the exact duration of Sollmann and Vowinckel's tenure remains open.
