Native Instruments has revealed Massive XL, featuring AI patch generation, custom wavetables, and polyphonic aftertouch.
Native Instruments has introduced Massive XL, the successor to Massive X. The software synthesizer expands upon its predecessor's engine with new sound design and synthesis capabilities.
AI synthesis and mutation
A central feature is the Generate function. An internally developed AI model analyzes imported audio files and transforms slices of up to four seconds into editable patches. Stem separation for Vocals, Bass, Drums, and Other is also included. The tool creates four preset variations by default, each mapped to six macro controls. Additionally, preset mutation adapted from Absynth 6 enables algorithmic variation or full randomization of loaded sounds.
Expanded sound engine and effects
Massive XL allows users to build custom wavetables by dragging and dropping audio files or single-cycle waveforms, supported by a waterfall display. Alongside two wavetable oscillators with ten modes, phase modulation oscillators, and two noise generators, the instrument features:
- A filter with nine modes
- Over 100 new wavetables and more than 100 new noise tables
- Three insert slots and three effect slots
- New onboard effects: Raum, Replika Shimmer, and Tape Wobble
- Polyphonic aftertouch support
Alongside the main synth, the free Massive XL Player provides preset playback without editing features. In a press release, Native Instruments' Tim Adnitt explained that Massive has always allowed producers to shape their own sounds. He noted that Massive XL focuses on accelerating this workflow while pairing the synth's familiar sonic profile with tools for more immediate experimentation.
