Ancient Methods takes on Guy Debord: Society of the Spectacle on Persephonic Sirens brings seven tracks of industrial, techno and dark disco. All the details.
On “Society of the Spectacle”, Ancient Methods takes on Guy Debord’s 1967 book and turns it into seven tracks about image, attention and today’s techno culture. The record came out on 3 April 2026 on Persephonic Sirens – according to First Floor, the first Ancient Methods EP in three years.

Debord on the dancefloor: what the EP is about
Ancient Methods is a German project that started as a duo and is now carried by Michael Wollenhaupt alone, as Side-Line notes. His tracks fuse industrial textures with club-oriented techno rhythms. For the new record, he went back to Debord’s critique of consumer society.
In his interview with Dirty Epic, he explains how fascinated he was by the precision of these analyses: written at a time without social media, they read almost like predictions in hindsight. He built the passages he considers most relevant into the tracks. What he criticises most is the devaluation of musical craftsmanship in favour of mere showmanship.
“I see the observations that have been fundamental to the concept of the EP as an invitation to agree or disagree, but mostly to think about it.”
— Ancient Methods, interview with Dirty Epic
He explicitly does not want it to be a political manifesto. Wollenhaupt describes his stance as fundamentally anti-ideological and sticks to “Think for yourself, question authority” – which, for the “SoS EP”, includes the algorithm as an authority.
The sound: industrial weight, dark disco, hand drums
Side-Line hears a blend of techno, trance and industrial. The magazine calls opener “Image Is My Commodity” a true sonic bomb: a cold, grim atmosphere and a near-perfect fusion of industrial and techno. First Floor describes the same track as colossally heavy, yet its slowed pacing recalls the chuggier end of the EBM spectrum.
The outlier is “Burn the Frame” with coldwave act Night In Athens. First Floor calls it a haunted piece of dark disco and the first Ancient Methods song that sounds like it could have come out on peak-era DFA. Listen closely to “Cache la misère”: rolling hand drum patterns run through the loops.
According to Side-Line, three short pieces work more as conceptual fragments that carry the narrative than as stand-alone tracks. That is why the EP works best in one go.

Context: from Jericho to the spectacle
First Floor recalls “The Jericho Records” from 2018, an album on which synthetic horns stand in for shofars to retell the biblical story of Jericho. Wollenhaupt occasionally works alongside Orphx. The new EP is not a sequel to “The Loud Age”: any connection was unintentional, he says in the Dirty Epic interview.
