Paula Temple: How Noise Manifesto is Changing Techno
· re:union Radio editorial · 2 min read
Paula Temple founded the Noise Manifesto label, shaping a politically charged, industrial techno sound with "Edge Of Everything."
Few artists connect techno so consistently with political conviction as Paula Temple. The Manchester-born producer stands for a hard, industrial sound – and for a label that consciously upends the power dynamics of the scene.
At a glance
- Paula Temple hails from Manchester, grew up in Preston, and released her first EP "The Speck Of The Future" in 2002
- Between 2003 and 2011, she withdrew from the scene due to misogyny in the music industry
- Since 2012, she has lived in Berlin; in 2015, she founded her own label Noise Manifesto
- Her debut album "Edge Of Everything" was released in 2019
A Withdrawal in Protest
Temple's path to techno was not straightforward. After starting as a teenager and her first release on Material Records, she withdrew from active music for almost a decade, unwilling to tolerate the misogyny in the industry any longer. Instead of releasing tracks, during this time she developed her own electronic devices, including the MIDI controller MXF8, and taught Ableton production in the UK starting in 2006.
Return to Berlin
In 2012, Paula Temple moved to Berlin and became active live again. This was followed by the EPs "Colonized" (2013), "Deathvox" (2014), and "Oscillate" (2015) – three releases that cemented her unmistakably raw, industrial signature sound and brought her back to international stages.
Noise Manifesto: A Label with Conviction
In 2015, Temple founded her own label Noise Manifesto. What's special about it isn't just a matter of style, but a structural one: at least half of the artists released are women or trans persons. With this, Noise Manifesto sets a conscious counterpoint to a scene long dominated by men.
In 2019, her debut album "Edge Of Everything" was released, which is described as critical of unscrupulous managers and archaic vertical hierarchy. Temple's approach is particularly evident live: her sets thrive on real-time sampling, editing, and remixing, rather than simply playing pre-made tracks.
"Edge Of Everything" is considered critical of unscrupulous managers and archaic vertical hierarchy.
