Solid State Logic introduces the Bus Comp Classic in 1U rack format, featuring a continuous Variable VCA Drive for harmonic saturation.
Analog Stereo Bus Compressor in 1U Format
Solid State Logic has unveiled the Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic. The analog hardware arrives in a 1U rack format, adopting the manufacturer's established concept while adding new sonic shaping capabilities.
The audio path of the 19-inch unit incorporates THAT 2181 VCAs alongside the company's dedicated sidechain architecture. A central new addition is the continuously adjustable Variable VCA Drive. This control blends the tonal profile between the clean response of the SuperAnalogue range (found in the 9000 series and Duality consoles) and the coloration of the FX384 and classic 4000 series. According to the manufacturer, harmonic saturation can reach up to 10 percent THD at its highest setting.
Workflow and Sidechain Capabilities
Dynamic parameters are set via stepped controls for ratio, attack, release, and the sidechain HPF, supporting repeatable adjustments. The unit includes a 2:1 ratio setting as well as the SSL Auto Release feature, which reacts according to the incoming audio material.
For detection circuit control, the unit features a built-in 6-step sidechain high-pass filter to roll off low frequencies. A dedicated stereo external sidechain input is also integrated, allowing an entire mix signal to trigger compression while processing individual stems independently.
