Techno in 2026: Berlin's heritage status, 400,000 people at Rave The Planet – and 39 percent of clubs in the red. What is really moving the scene right now.
Techno in 2026 has two faces: on 15 August, according to the organisers' estimate, around 400,000 people joined the Rave The Planet Parade on Straße des 17. Juni. At the same time, 39 percent of the Berlin clubs and promoters surveyed closed the 2025 financial year at a loss. If you want to know where the scene is heading, you need to think about both.

From the dancefloor to the heritage inventory
The German Commission for UNESCO describes techno culture as a subculture built around techno that has shaped large parts of Berlin since the mid to late 1980s. At its core are the music and the dance events, plus fashion and raves. It was added in 2024, in the fields of performing arts and social practices, rituals and festive events.
What stands out is how the commission describes knowledge in the scene: curating music programmes or setting up sound systems properly is largely self-taught – through events, magazines, vlogs and masterclasses. Rave The Planet researched and coordinated the application, which was approved in March 2024.
Rave The Planet 2026: the parade in numbers
The parade explicitly sees itself as a political demonstration – in the tradition of the first Love Parade, which moved along Kurfürstendamm on 1 July 1989 under the motto “Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen”. Hundreds of volunteers worked as stewards, in the Eco Team and in awareness teams.

Full floors, empty tills: the state of the clubs
The study “Clubkultur Berlin 2026” reveals a contradiction: 83 percent of respondents report an average capacity of at least 50 percent, a third even more than 75 percent. Yet the share of loss-making venues keeps growing. The business model has flipped too – in 2017 around 60 percent of revenue came from food and drinks, in 2025 59 percent comes from admission fees.
Watergate, opened on the Spree in 2002, had to close at the end of 2024 after its lease was not renewed. According to Club Commission spokesperson Lutz Leichsenring, around 43 percent of Berlin club operators are affected by rising commercial rents. After the Berlin election: space is the currency
In the Berlin state election on 20 September, Die Linke became the strongest party with 25.7 percent, according to the provisional result. It is announcing a dedicated venue funding scheme for clubs for the first time; the SPD and the Greens also propose funding structures. The noise protection fund, running since 2018, is currently not accepting new applications. For the RAW site, the district, the Senate and the owner agreed on a lease in August.
