Thorin Tønsberg — The Mind Behind re:union
From a basement studio in southern Germany to Europe's darkest dance floors: A portrait of the producer, DJ and label founder who fuses Dark Techno with hypnotic depth.
Some artists put themselves at the centre. And then there's Thorin Tønsberg. The mind behind re:union Records has spent years doing the exact opposite: letting the sound do the talking, putting the community first, and acting more as a director than a performer.
Raised in southern Germany, Thorin dove into the local techno scene in the mid-2010s — first as a listener, then behind the decks in small clubs, eventually with his own sketches in Ableton Live. The breakthrough as a producer came around 2022: the first tracks, raw and uncompromising, landed on SoundCloud and found an audience hungry for exactly what was missing — Dark Techno with substance, not just noise.
The signature: dark, hard, hypnotic
Anyone listening to Thorin's sets recognises the pattern immediately: driving 140-bpm current, interlocking percussion on top, atmospheric pads above, and sometimes a single whispered vocal that tips the entire track over. The sound moves between Hard Techno with industrial edges and those hypnotic passages that echo Berlin traditions without copying them. A prime example is his current EP After the Storm.
„I'm not a fan of pure brutality," Thorin says in one of his rare interviews. „I'm after tension. A good Dark Techno track has to breathe. First you pull the air out, then you give it back — and only then does the drop hit." That philosophy runs through every production: patience, space, then release.
The studio: hybrid of software and hardware
The work happens in a home studio in southern Germany — Ableton Live as the backbone, supported by a growing collection of analogue synthesisers and a small Eurorack modular for textures you can't achieve with plugins alone. Moog basses, Elektron drums, a Roland System-1m for high-end experiments. The modular rack is used mainly for FX: reverb tails, noise sweeps, unpredictable modulations that make every track a one-off.
„Hardware forces me to make decisions," he explains. „In software I can loop things forever. On a synth I turn a knob, hit record, and that's the take. It makes the sound more direct."

Releases and shows
Since 2022, re:union Records has released more than ten titles, most of them solo tracks under his own name. The full catalogue lives on Spotify and on Beatport, where individual tracks regularly slide into the hard techno charts.
Thorin's own appearances currently focus on two formats: Friday night live shows and selected club bookings. The Friday Night Live sessions are more than a stream — they are a meeting point. Three hundred, sometimes five hundred listeners in chat at once, live requests, shoutouts around the world.

Where 2026 is heading
Several steps are planned for 2026: an album project going deeper into the more ambient side of the sound; additional guest slots on the label to broaden the signature; and an expansion of the live infrastructure around Friday Night Live. „The label is not a solo thing to me," Thorin makes clear. „It's called re:union because it's about coming together. The plan is to make the roof bigger — not louder."
