DJM-A9: Pioneer DJ unveils new 4-channel club mixer

· re:union Radio editorial · 3 min read

Pioneer DJ's DJM-A9 brings 32-bit converters, Booth EQ, and phantom power for microphones to the club.

The DJM-A9 is Pioneer DJ's new 4-channel mixer for club use. The company positions it as the successor to the DJM-900NXS2 series, claiming the device raises the standard for club mixers.

At a glance

  • 4-channel mixer with 32-bit A/D and D/A converters from ESS Technology
  • 14 Beat FX, including three new effects: Mobius, Triplet Filter, and Triplet Roll
  • 2-band Booth EQ and, for the first time, phantom-powered microphone input
  • Third-generation MAGVEL FADER and built-in Wi-Fi for the Stagehand app

Converters and Sound

Pioneer DJ uses 32-bit converters from ESS Technology in the DJM-A9, both at the input and at the output for master and booth signals. The manufacturer describes the result as “crystal-clear, high-resolution sound” and promises that the sound from the booth monitors will be the same as what the audience hears on the dancefloor. For this very purpose, there's a dedicated 2-band Booth EQ for high and low frequencies, allowing you to adjust the sound at the booth independently of the main mix.

Effects and Operation

For effect control, the DJM-A9 features a color display for operating the Beat FX, as well as a dedicated CH-SELECT button for quick channel switching. A total of 14 Beat FX are available, complemented by three new effects: Mobius, Triplet Filter, and Triplet Roll. Echo and Ping-Pong delay can be controlled via the illuminated X-Pad.

Microphone and Connections

New is a phantom-powered microphone input – according to Pioneer DJ, the first of its kind on a DJ mixer. In addition, there are three microphone effects (Echo, Pitch, Megaphone), a dedicated reverb effect, and a push-to-talk button; the microphone signal can optionally be excluded from recordings. For connections, the DJM-A9 offers four USB ports (two Type-B, two Type-C), a Bluetooth input that can be routed to any channel, and two independent headphone outputs.

Software and Club Infrastructure

The mixer supports DVS operation with rekordbox and Serato DJ Pro, as well as recording and streaming via DJM-REC. For everyday club use, it features built-in Wi-Fi for the Stagehand app for iPad remote monitoring, plus ShowKontrol and a PRO-DJ-LINK Bridge for front-of-house applications. The crossfader is a third-generation MAGVEL FADER, and the channel faders are said by the manufacturer to be of higher quality than those on the DJM-900NXS2.
