GForce Software has released a software recreation of the Oberheim Matrix-12, created in collaboration with Oberheim and Marcus Ryle.
GForce Software has introduced the Oberheim Matrix-12 as a software instrument. Developed in collaboration with Oberheim and Marcus Ryle, one of the original hardware designers, the plugin recreates the Matrix-12 from 1985 alongside its predecessor, the Xpander, while adding features tailored to modern production environments.
Synthesis Architecture
The software retains the twelve voices of the original hardware. Each voice includes two oscillators featuring triangle, sawtooth, and pulse waveforms. The second oscillator also provides noise and hard sync, with frequency modulation integrated into the architecture. The signal feeds into a fifteen-mode filter followed by two VCAs.
Extensive modulation sources are available for each individual voice:
- Five envelopes and five LFOs
- Four ramp generators
- Three tracking generators for signal remapping
- A lag processor for smooth transitions
Interface and Features
The software introduces an interface that visually displays modulation routing and signal flow. Modulation can be assigned via drag-and-drop. Additional features include six keyboard zones, micro arpeggiators, and full MPE support. The instrument responds to velocity, release velocity, pressure, pitch bend, and modulation wheel movements.
The plugin runs on macOS in standalone mode as well as Audio Units, AAX, VST, and VST3 formats. On Windows, standalone, AAX, VST, and VST3 versions are provided.
