From Underground Resistance to Axis
Before switching to a solo career, Jeff Mills was a co-founder of Underground Resistance in the late 1980s, the Detroit collective he built together with 'Mad' Mike Banks and Robert Hood. The group deliberately opposed commercialization and linked their music to political consciousness. Mills left the collective in 1991 to pursue his own path.
Axis Records: a more minimal approach
In 1992, Mills founded Axis Records in Chicago together with Robert Hood. He released the bulk of his solo work through the label, and over time the sublabels Purpose Maker, Tomorrow and 6277 were added. All three pursued a consciously more minimal sound than was otherwise common in techno in the early 90s — a reduction that still defines Mills' signature today.
One work among many
"The Trip To Vega" joins a catalog that includes A Trip to the Moon (2017) and Moon – The Area of Influence (2019) — continuing Mills' long-running engagement with space and science-fiction themes. Even his early appearances on Detroit radio stations WDRQ and WJLB in the 1980s showed his feel for DJ techniques like beat juggling and scratching, with which he helped raise the profile of local techno acts like Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins. In 2017 he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France — proof of how far his influence reaches beyond the club.
Beyond Axis: Further current releases
Alongside "The Trip To Vega", Axis Records currently also lists Millsart – Whatever The Case (12" Vinyl, AX128) as well as releases from the affiliated project Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. Live recordings like Live at Liquid Room are also available on CD and cassette — a sign of how active the label remains beyond classic studio albums.
